UNSEENPRESS is a collective for photographers to discuss and sell their work. We are a Community Interest Company based in Plymouth, founded by Robin Mudge and a group of working photographers.
We started because the photobook world has a gatekeeping problem. Good work goes unseen because there is nowhere to show it, no one to talk it through with, and too little money left for the maker once a book is sold. So we built the things we needed: a place to share and critique work, and Distro-Club, a marketplace for printed and digital publications that returns 85p of every pound to the person who made the work.
We also look ahead. Folding phones have put a two-page spread back in people’s pockets, and we think that opens a new genre of publishing. The Chapman’s Return, Robin’s book on hybrid publishing, explains it, and two digital kits help you author your own e-publications for folding screens. Our consultancy helps photographers turn existing work into new print and digital variants, and under the name UNFOLDED ADDITIONS we are producing new works made for the folding phone from the start.
Membership is open to anyone who makes or loves photobooks and zines: join our online community, the Photobook & Zine Studio, and you become a member of the collective. As a CIC we answer to those members, with no outside investors. Any surplus goes back into the collective.

The Chapman’s Return
New opportunities in the photobook market: a guide to hybrid print and digital publishing for the folding-phone era.
A photobook is a sequence of spreads, two pages meeting at a fold. Folding phones put that fold back in the reader’s hand.
In The Chapman’s Return, Robin Mudge sets out a new genre of publishing: work made to live in print and as a responsive EPUB on folding-screen phones at the same time. The book covers the photobook, the folding screen and the responsive EPUB. It shows how the hinge of a phone works like the gutter of a book, how a sequence changes when a reader opens it instead of scrolling it, and how independent photographers can publish this way now.
The chapman was the travelling pedlar who carried chapbooks, ballads and prints from town to town. Real books still matter, and the chapman is coming back with a folding phone in his tray.
